WELCOME TO UPWARD BOUND!

Our History

SUNY Brockport has been home the Upward Bound Program since 1995. Upward Bound is a US Department of Education pre-college TRiO program for high school students.

Upward Bound challenges program participants to obtain the skills and motivation necessary to enter and succeed in a program of post-secondary education.

TRiO is a set of federally funded college opportunity programs. They were created as a result of the Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to address the social, economic, academic, and cultural barriers to higher education among students who are 1st in their families to attend college and who may need the financial assistance to do so.

Upward Bound was the very 1st TRiO program! There are many influential and famous people who are alumni; including Christopher Williamson (Assistant Secretary for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at the Department of Labor), actresses Angela Bassett and Viola Davis, the first Hispanic astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz, NBA coach and Olympic medalist Patrick Ewing, ABC News correspondent John Quinones, U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, NBA basketball player A. C. Green, first African American astronaut Bernard Harris, Wisconsin State Senator Kevin Shibilski, and American R&B singer and actress who won the twelfth season of American Idol Candice Rickelle Glover are just a few.
